India has not been known to be the most pet-traveller-friendly place for a long time. Owners who plan to travel within the country by rail are often deterred by the lack of information or facilities for their furry companions. In fact, they usually have no choice but to leave their animals behind in the temporary care of friends, other family members, or professional pet care-givers. However, all that is about to change as a pet-friendly policy has been put into effect by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). You can now travel with your cat/dog on trains.
At the moment, the only two animals that are allowed on board India’s trains are dogs and cats. The coach selected should be an AC First Class or a First Class coupe. One can even avail of the entire compartment exclusively by booking it for extra fees.
For the luggage-cum-brake van, pets can be booked in a carrier or a dog box under the supervision of the train manager.
Animals travelling by train must have all mandatory vaccinations and certificates and paperwork relating to it must be carried by the human owner. A veterinarian must grant a fitness certificate 24-48 hours before the journey begins.
Carry food, water, toys, etc for the animal’s comfort. If one’s pet’s behaviour causes discomfort to other travellers and a complaint is made, then the animal might be shifted to the Guard’s Van. No refund will be provided.
So, what are you waiting for? Plan your next vacation train journey with your furry friends.
