World Sparrow Day is a day designated to raise awareness of the house sparrow and other birds commonly found in urban environments, and of threats to their populations. The day is observed on 20 March every year, in an international initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and numerous other national and international organizations.
The Nature Forever Society was founded by Mohammed Dilawar, a conservationist who started his work by helping the house sparrow in Nashik, Maharashtra, and who was named one of the ‘Heroes of the Environment’ in 2008 by Time magazine. The society was formally registered the following year. The idea of marking World Sparrow Day came up during an informal discussion at the Nature Forever Society’s office. The idea was to earmark a day for the little bird to spread the message of conservation of such common birds and also to celebrate the beauty of the common biodiversity that residents of cities often take for granted.
The first World Sparrow Day was observed in 2010 in different parts of the world by carrying out different activities and staging events like art competitions, awareness campaigns, and sparrow ‘processions’.
Here is how some Tweeple observed the occasion today:
#worldsparrowday the happy Twitter of the tiny birds, their hard work to build homes and gossip. So much gossip when they fly back home every twilight. What’s not to love? No wonder they’re called tai or sister in marathi pic.twitter.com/QpiB3dQmAC
