Cats can be adorable, individualistic, lazy. They can be cute, mischievous, playful. They can also be destructive. This last trait may not be deliberate, but it can stem from their playfulness and mischievousness, as a Chinese woman with a pet cat discovered recently.

The cat, which was playing in the kitchen of the house when its human companion was away, accidentally turned on an induction stove when it stepped on the appliance’s touch panel, a report in the South China Morning Post newspaper said. (A fine example of how a matter of convenience can become an inconvenience in the blink of an eye.)

The result: the house, in Sichuan province, caught fire and firefighters had to be called in to put out the blaze. Property worth 100,000 yuan (about Rs 11 lakh) was damaged in the incident earlier this month, the newspaper reported.

The cat, thankfully, was unharmed. The frightened animal was found hiding in an upstairs cabinet, covered in soot.

The homeowner did not lose it with her pet, however, and blamed herself for the accident, the report said. She promised to make sure to shut off the power to all electrical and electronic appliances when leaving home in future.
