The recent death of a beloved dog named Kalu has deeply affected the community of Bahadurpur village in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Kalu, who had been an integral part of the village for the past decade, was adopted by the Umale family. His death led to an outpouring of grief from the villagers, who organized a funeral procession that mirrored human rituals. The procession included a decorated jeep, flower petals, and a band, showing the deep love they had for Kalu.

The dog’s owner told The Hindu, “He was not sick and we don’t know what happened suddenly. When someone dies of an illness, we do not get heartbroken, but due to his sudden death, our hearts are broken.”

Villagers said Kalu kept the village safe by deterring thieves. They claimed that no thefts occurred in the village in his lifetime. His passing prompted the community to hold multiple memorial meetings and a tribute meeting last week to honour his memory. These remarkable tributes highlight the strong bond between the villagers and Kalu, demonstrating how animals can significantly impact their human companions and become cherished members of a community.
