Reward for information on Florida cat killer doubled to $15,000

Alley Cat Allies, leader of a global movement to protect cats and kittens, has doubled its reward offer from $7,500 to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for killing several cats in the town of Lake Clarke Shores, Palm Beach County, Florida, around April. According to investigators, the cats appeared to have been shot.

Anyone with information on the cat killer or killers is requested to contact the Lake Clarke Shores Police Department at 561-964-1515 and ask for Lieutenant Fisher. Alley Cat Allies also sent postcards to households across Palm Beach County to alert residents about the case and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

This may appear strange to readers in India who are used to learning about kittens and pups being drowned or burnt alive, dogs having acid thrown on them or being stoned to death, and so on. In many of these cases, the perpetrators themselves shoot videos on their cell phone cameras and post them online, knowing fully well that nothing will happen to them. It is public knowledge that the lazy, incompetent, corrupt police forces in most Indian states will do nothing unless there is a public furore or political pressure, and neither is likely to materialize for a bunch of kittens. Innumerable are the cases in the past 20 years when people have even stoned or clubbed leopards to death for “intruding” into human settlements and not one person has been punished.

“The cat victims of these horrific acts of cruelty deserve justice, and Alley Cat Allies is determined to achieve it,” said Coryn Julien, programme communications officer for Alley Cat Allies. “Convicting the person or persons responsible is essential for the safety of animals and people in Lake Clarke Shores. We hope increasing the reward will result in information that pinpoints the perpetrator so they can be penalized to the fullest extent of the law.”

Investigators say each cat was found dead in bodies of water in the area of Carambola Road and Carambola Circle of Lake Clarke Shores in and before April. Cats were reported missing as far back as December.

Every animal deserves to be protected from cruelty, Alley Cat Allies said in a press release. The well-documented link between animal cruelty and violence towards people also factors into the gravity of these crimes in Lake Clarke Shores, the organization said. All 50 states of the USA and the District of Columbia have enacted laws criminalizing acts of cruelty towards animals.
